Movie stars make their careers in Hollywood, U.S.A,  but several of them aren't actually American citizens. Their origins span across six continents, and while they work in the U.S., most of these A-list stars have kept their international citizenships.

Many A-list stars have come from other countries, arriving in the United States for a better chance in the entertainment industry. Stars like Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth are a couple of foreign-born celebs who call both the U.S. and their native countries home. These stars below aren't U.S. citizens, with one star famously renouncing their citizenship.

10 Tina Turner

Icon Tina Turner may have been born in Tennessee, but this star no longer calls the U.S. home. According to Reuters, Turner renounced her American citizenship in 2013 and became a Swiss citizen after living in Switzerland for two decades.

In a statement about why she relinquished her U.S. citizenship, the 81-year-old songstress said, "I'm very happy in Switzerland and I feel home here." Turner also made the move to be with her long-time partner, Swiss record producer Erwin Bach.

9 Kiefer Sutherland

Actor Kiefer Sutherland may have an American accent, but this star was actually born in Paddington, London, and later moved to Canada with his family. This makes the 24 star a British/Canadian dual citizen. He would eventually move to California, to jump-start his Hollywood career, which is maybe why he has an American accent.

According to CBC, the actor enjoys talking about politics, but unfortunately, he can't vote in the U.S. because he isn't a citizen.

8 Robert Pattinson

This Twilight star may put on his best American accent, but Robert Pattinson is a British citizen. The actor was born in London, England, and had quite a few roles in movies and television films back home before he made it big in the United States with his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies.

According to Esquire, Pattinson is currently back in London with his girlfriend Suki Waterhouse where they have been quarantining amid the pandemic. The two have been living in a London flat where Waterhouse has shared a few photos inside their home on Instagram.

7 Kim Cattrall

Fans may be surprised to learn that the actress behind Samantha Jones from Sex and the City is not American at all. According to Ranker, actress Kim Cattrall was actually born in England and her parents later moved the family to Canada. Cattrall is a Canadian citizen who still resides there.

The New York Times reported that the actress purchased a waterfront home on the east coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia and lives there with her partner, Russell Thomas.

6 Trevor Noah

Comedian Trevor Noah was born in apartheid-era South Africa and at the time, his birth was regarded as a crime because his parents were interracial, according to CheatSheet. After apartheid ended, Noah was just 10-years-old, but already had a love for acting. He would later start a career as a comedian and found himself moving to the U.S. to work for Comedy Central.

However, there has been some controversy surrounding his citizenship after he admitted to U.S. Senator Lindsay Graham that he was not a U.S. citizen and does not have a green card. It appears that the star is on a work visa.

5 Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman has been in countless American films including the Thor series and Black Swan, but this A-list Hollywood star holds Israeli citizenship, born in Jerusalem, even though she was raised in the U.S.

In 2014, the star moved to Paris, France, to be with her husband, Benjamin Millepied, who works as the director of dance at the Paris Opera Ballet, according to Economic Times.

4 Emma Watson

Harry Potter star Emma Watson is not an American citizen, even though she did study and graduate from Brown University in Rhode Island in 2014. The star holds British citizenship and reflected that during the 2016 U.S. election, she wished she could vote, according to Vanity Fair.

"It has been excruciating to sit on the sidelines in the months leading up to this election," Watson said.

3 Priyanka Chopra

The lovely Priyanka Chopra is not an American citizen after casting her vote in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, an Indian general election, proving that she is indeed an Indian citizen.

According to Q&A, the star has a work visa, but if she becomes a U.S. citizen, she can no longer remain an Indian citizen, since the country does not recognize dual citizenship.

2 Chris Hemsworth

Actor Chris Hemsworth may have been in several American films, most notably starring as Thor in the Marvel movies, but this star was born in  Melbourne, Australia, and holds Australian citizenship. Hemsworth lived in Los Angeles for a time but decided to move his entire family back to Byron Bay, Australia, in 2015.

1 Ryan Gosling

Ryan Reynolds is one of Canada's most famous actors. The star retains his Canadian citizenship even though he's been in several American movies including La, La Land, and The Notebook. 

The star talked about his Canadian roots in an interview, sharing, "I think it was very helpful to grow up in Canada, or in a small town. I think if you grow up [in L.A.], it might be hard to remember that there's a world outside of it."
